Liberal Government Survives Conservative Non-Confidence Motion with NDP Support
OTTAWA – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s latest effort to bring down the Liberal minority government was thwarted Monday, thanks to the New Democrats’ refusal to back the motion.
The non-confidence motion cited NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s recent criticisms of the Liberals on labour issues, attempting to exploit divisions between the two parties. However, Singh firmly rejected the Conservatives’ overture, dismissing it as “political games.”
“We’re not going to vote in favour of any of their games because that’s what they’re doing. They’re playing games,” Singh said after the vote tally confirmed the government’s survival.

Meanwhile, MPs also debated an NDP opposition motion to permanently remove the GST on essential items and expand the Liberals’ proposed $250 “working Canadians rebate” to include vulnerable groups such as fully retired seniors and those relying on disability benefits. Despite support from the NDP and Greens, the motion was defeated, with Hamilton East—Stoney Creek Liberal MP Chad Collins as the lone government member to vote in its favor.
The Liberals originally tied the GST holiday to the rebate plan, but the measures were split after the NDP demanded broader eligibility for support. While the current rebate plan covers working Canadians earning under $150,000 annually and is projected to benefit 18.7 million people at a cost of $4.7 billion, Singh has signaled openness to further negotiations.
“Seniors have to get it, people living with disabilities have to get it, a mom trying to raise her kid should get it,” Singh emphasized, calling for improvements to the rebate before offering his party’s full support.
The Conservatives will push forward with their final opposition motion of the session on Tuesday, proposing a GST exemption for new homes under $1 million. Another key vote will be held on the government’s $21.6 billion supplementary estimates, which fund critical programs such as housing, dental care, and disaster assistance.
As Parliament prepares for a marathon voting session, the outcome of these measures will shape the political landscape heading into the new year. source https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/government-faces-third-tory-non-confidence-vote-ahead-of-potential-fiscal-hurdle-1.7138316
